“Children’s Choice”

This month, our EQ Show and Tell subject will be chosen by each individual child!  What would your child like to bring in to share with his or her classmates?  It may be a favorite book, a flavorful food, a fabulous toy, or a wonderful vacation memory.  It could be a photo of a friend or relative, or the family dog.  Whatever your little one wants to talk about, send him or her to school with it, or with a picture of it, a recipe, or a sample!  This will make everyone’s turn at Show & Tell a surprise!

April 2019 Show & Tell

Preschool/Kindergarten  EQ Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, April 25th & 26th
“If You Could Live Under the Sea, What Kind of Creature Would You Be?” *

In concert with our theme this month, our EQ Show & Tell invites us to wonder about what it would be like to be one of the fantastic creatures living in our oceans.  This stretches our emotional intelligence, as we imagine being in someone else’s position and what life might be like somewhere else.

Have fun with this, as you talk about what you and your child might prefer, and why.  Perhaps you would like to be a giant whale, or a happy porpoise jumping in and out of the waves.  The octopus might be a wise choice, because who couldn’t use 8 arms?  Beloved Nemo makes that little clown anemonefish a popular choice.  But we have been learning about so many life-forms, it may be hard to choose!

Send your child to school ready to let us know what his or her chosen sea creature is, and why.  You might like to send along a picture, to help explain it to the class.  We may be surprised by how we populate the sea!

* (Please note that this is a correction from the April calendar; we listed last year’s Show & Tell by mistake.)

March 2019 Show & Tell

Preschool/Kindergarten  EQ Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, March 21st & 22nd
“My Favorite Story…”

Reading and telling stories allows children to relate to others more easily, to understand another’s perspective, and also creates an emotional bond between the storyteller and the listener.  As an added bonus, reading stories also reinforces an appreciation for literacy and literature!  In conjunction with our “Happily Ever After, Tall Tales & Myth Busters” Theme, we invite every child to bring in their favorite story to share on our EQ Show & Tell days (we will not schedule parents to read on these two days).

As noted on our March calendar, we are also inviting parents (or Grandparents, Aunts, special friends) to come in to read or tell a special story to the children during their Language Arts period. You and your little one can choose a favorite story, and sign up with our Language Arts Specialist or our Director. Space is limited, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Thank you for participating!

“Acts of Kindness”

This month’s Show & Tell is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the thoughtfulness and generosity that our Kinder Works children display each and every day!  Please share an “Act of Kindness” that you witnessed your child do either at home or elsewhere by writing it inside a heart (hearts were sent home last week in your child’s mail file).  Then, have/help your child cut-out, color, paint, and/or decorate the heart to make it “uniquely his/her own.”

We look forward to celebrating these “Acts of Kindness” during Show & Tell this month!

January 2019 Show & Tell

Preschool/Kindergarten  EQ Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, January 24th & 25th
“My Special Bedtime Routine…”

This month we travel to the cold, uniquely beautiful, northernmost regions of the Earth.  Simple concepts like “nighttime” and “daytime” challenge our senses and our daily routines.  For instance, in Barrow, Alaska, the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon during December and January, so it’s dark all the time except for a couple of hours every afternoon.  Children adapt to playing outside and going to bed in the moonlight!

Engage in a discussion with your child about his/her special bedtime routine, then send your child to school ready to talk about it with his/her classmates.  It could be a favorite song, storybook, bath toy, small pillow or blanket, night light, even a toothbrush!

Please note that your child’s Show & Tell must be able to fit into a small, plastic grocery bag and must be labeled with his/her name.

November 2018 Show & Tell

Preschool/Kindergarten  EQ Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, November 15th & 16th

“Something You are Grateful For”

November is the beginning of the season of caring, giving, and gratitude, and in that spirit our Show & Tell will focus on being grateful.

Help your child look at the different ways that he or she shows appreciation… maybe with words, hugs and smiles, pictures or notes, or even by trying to “return the favor” and pay kindness forward!

Please send in a picture (e.g., photo or drawing, collage, mosaic, etc.) of the people, experiences, and /or things for which he/she is most thankful.

“Practicing Self-Calming Skills”

This is the time of year when we focus on our self calming skills… With each night falling earlier, and Halloween decorations like jack-o-lanterns, spiders, and skeletons, it can be a scary time of year for little ones.  It’s important to teach self-calming skills so children can reassure themselves amidst all the excitement and change.

A child may find comfort in a stuffed toy or a blanket, in a song or memory or thought.  A child may know to take a deep breath, ask for a hug, or distract him or herself with a favorite activity.

Please send your child to school ready to share, or demonstrate how s/he finds comfort and calm.  Maybe another child finds reassurance in the same way, so feelings are validated and relationships are strengthened in this EQ opportunity.

Our September EQ Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, September 20th & 21st
“All About Me, and Getting To Know You”

As we get to know each other, we’d like to give each child a chance to share a little about him/herself at our first EQ Show & Tell of the school year.  This sharing time validates a child’s feelings of importance and develops social skills that are fundamental to every relationship: the skills of speaking and listening.

Show & Tell may be a favorite toy (that your child can operate on his/her own), a picture drawn or taken to demonstrate an accomplishment, or how your family spent the summer… or anything that helps your child tell about him/herself!

“Our Most Memorable Family Adventure!”

Spring has arrived and is in full force! At Kinder Works, we take time to discover the science, beauty, poetry and songs of nature’s renewal. After a long winter when everything is covered and hidden from sight, we venture out to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, textures and tastes with our families and friends.

Share a memorable adventure that you experienced as a family. Your child may bring a photo, drawing, souvenir, scrapbook page or other memento that depicts a day trip (to the zoo, aquarium, museum, etc.), a train ride into the city, a vacation to a far-away place, a beach holiday, etc. During this spring season, let’s enjoy seeing & hearing about the world through each other’s eyes!

April Show & Tell

Preschool/Kindergarten SEL (“EQ”) Show & Tell
Thursday & Friday, April 19th & 20th
“Where Did My Family Come From?”

As we learn about faraway places in exotic climes, it’s instructive to realize that our own family has come a long way to be here in PA.  This month, we will be looking at maps, as well as the globe, to see where India is located.  At the same time, we can find out where our relatives came from, and appreciate that in this “digital age,” when it appears that everyone is right here in the palm of your hand, we are really from all over our world!

Your teachers will send home one suitcase.  Please talk with your little one about which relative(s) came from where… and write your family name on the suitcase along with the country/city of origin.  Look for our map display!
